The D is a party casino located in the middle of the Fremont Street Experience. It is across from Fremont Casino and diagonal from Binion’s. Golden Nugget is next door on the other side of the main stage on the Fremont Street Experience.
The D is on the former site of Fitzgeralds. It was acquired by Derek and Greg Stevens in 2011. The name was changed to The D in 2012. The theme is Detroit, which is where the Stevens brothers are from originally.
The D is a two-story casino. The lower level has a split personality. During the day, it is home to an old school casino feel. Swing shift and graveyard offer a party pit feel. One difference between the party pit at The D and others in Las Vegas is that The D does not change the rules. All blackjack at the D pay 3-2 24 hours a day, even when dealt by the party pit girls. The upstairs at The D is a retro casino that includes older machines, including a Sigma Derby virtual horse racing one.
The D Games and Tables
There are 11 blackjack tables at the D. Eight are on the main floor, while three are located in a semi-private high limit salon. The dealer hits soft 17 at all blackjack games at The D. All blackjacks pay 3-2.
There are five six-deck shoe blackjack tables. These games permit double down before and after splitting. The bet limits are $5 to $2,500. The house edge is 0.65%.
There are two double deck Free Bet Blackjack tables. That game gives player a free double down on 9, 10 and 11 and free splits on all hands except 10’s. In exchange for this, the dealer pushes any live hand if 22 is drawn by the house. The bet limits are $5 to $2,500.
There is a War Blackjack table where players may make a side bet on the first up card of the dealer against the first one dealt to the player. The hand proceeds as normal after that. Players may double down on any two cards and after splitting. The bet limits are $5 to $1,000.
There are two six-deck shoe games in the salon, which is up a few stairs off the main casino floor. Players may double down before and after splitting. The bet limits are $25 to $5,000.
There is one double deck blackjack table. It is dealt out of a shoe. Double down before and after splitting is allowed. The limits are $50 to $5,000. The house edge is 0.4%.
The D Players Card for Frequent Blackjack Players
The D is quick to give comps to players. This is especially true for weekday action. A $10 player can expect a good mailer that includes free bets and food vouchers. That action may even get a free hotel room each month. Moving that action up to $25 will get the red carpet VIP treatment. It doesn’t hurt to mix the play up with some video poker or 10 times craps.
What’s Different?
The D is one of just three casinos in downtown Las Vegas that offer a high limit salon. Golden Gate and Golden Nugget are the other two. It pays 3-2 on every blackjack. Only El Cortez, Golden Gate and Plaza can say that downtown. The party pit paying 3-2 is a nice touch. The atmosphere at The D is like no other place in downtown Las Vegas. The Long Bar is the nicest bar downtown. Make sure to avoid the terrible video poker pay tables at it.
